5 tips on doing your laundry right

1. Separate and divide for laundry success

Separate your laundry into four piles: Whites, light-coloured, dark-coloured, and delicates (PS.  If you want to reduce the amount of loads, you can combine the whites and light-coloured ones). Heavy fabrics like jeans and towels require a different washing-machine cycle than delicate items (like bras and lingerie), or medium-weight ones like beddings. Women’s lingerie, like bras, can be damaged in machines. These items should be done apart using the delicate cycle, though if you don’t have the time to do an extra load, you can put them in a special mesh bag that will protect them if you throw them in the regular wash.

2. Choose the right settings

Use hot water for light-coloured items that are extremely stained or smelly. Use cold water for dark clothes (especially new ones) whose colous are more likely to run. Cotton items also require cold water to avoid shrinkage.

3. Use the right detergent

The rule of the thumb is: Use a high-suds detergent in a top-loading washer and a low-suds detergent in a front loader. Try this process: Fill your washer with water to about one-third full, and then add the bleach if you’re using it. Next, add the detergent, swish it around in the water to make sure it’s dissolved, and then add your clothes. Add the softener only in the last cycle so the softening benefits won’t be washed away at the start. Also never apply softener directly to dry fabrics as it can leave a watermark-like stain.

4. Don’t overload the washer

For longer washer lifespan, don’t overload the machine. If you pack it too tightly, there’s less room for the machine to agitate the dirt out of your washing. The best way to get a correct load is to weigh it to fit in with your machine’s capacity. As a rough guide, if you have more than 15 items, you’ve put in too much.

5. Fix food stains

Coffee splashes, juice or curry on your clothes? Fret not, as Samsung new Activ DualWash* makes cleaning so much easier. Its built-in sink and side water-jet system allows for hand-washing of delicate items and pre-treating soiled clothes. Simply soak, scrub and slide the items into the tub and continue your washing.

*The Activ Dualwash™ is available at all major consumer electronics stores at a price range of $999 to $1,399, depending on model selection.
